                       ARCH1101: Three Memorable Images

1. My Best Work

This is one of my Design and Technology projects when I did it as an elective during High School. Usually, a kimono would follow the conventions of being floral or covered in repetitive patterns. However, during that year, I also studied Animation in my English class, where we watched Japanese animation from Japan. In particular, Spirited Away. I found the film to emit a nostalgic, but peaceful mood. In doing so, I was inspired to create my kimono to be Spirited Away themed, targeting the audience who enjoy Japanese animation and to also feel a sense of peace and relaxation when wearing it around the home.

2. Great Architecture

During my trip to Japan, I often enjoyed visited Temples or ancient places that hold the Japanese heritage. Displayed in the image is one of the sub-temples near Todaiji Temple, as well as the households around the area. By simply observing the image, we can feel a sense of solitary and inner-peace. I especially admire how much the architecture fits in with nature, how there are always trees surrounding the statues and temple, as if encapsulating the temple's serenity. The chipped off paint off the wooden walls, the old stone covered in algae but signs of cleaners wiping the statues to preserve sacredness- inspire and motivate me to become more grateful of my surroundings, to take care of what matters most to me. Need not to be Buddhist or religious, simply visiting this piece of architecture really allows a sense of peace to resonate within you spiritually. Such a heart warming and peaceful vibe indeed makes me much admire Todaiji Temple and its surrounds.

3. Beautiful Image (Originally Taken by Me)

I can't help but admit that Japan has made me find beauty in the smallest, everyday things. The image on the left is a small fence that allows you to tie any wishes onto, or if you were predicted to have bad luck during new year fortune telling, you'd tie it there to rid misfortune. Once all the white papers were collated together, it seemed as if the Japanese community had really collaborated and united as one to help each other strive for better lives, and a better society. It shows a sense of hope in the midst of misfortune and sadness, that one must continue to have faith in themselves and the world around them to achieve a sense of change through wishes and collaborative effort. Similarly, the image on the right shows a sense of togetherness. People from all around the world are in one place to observe a place so delicate and precious to the Japanese community. The sunset in the sky further adds to the beauty of the image, it lightens up one's mood through its artsy and majestic clouds infused with the blue in the sky. Again, it really emits a sense of hope; that by simply looking up, we can gain courage to better oneself and society.

PROJECT 3: WEEK 1 ONE THEORY

Words - Geometry   - Structural system   - Patterns and symmetry constraints   - Important to select the right objective function   Words turned into Theories   1. Geometry allows architecture to become more complex and intriguing, however, there are constraints to its design such as the way it is engineered.   2. There are both hidden and exposed aspects to architecture, however they are both intertwined with structural features that adds to the aesthetic, or else hidden by a facade.   3. Although patterns and symmetry may seem repetitive and simplistic, with careful designing, it may provide an aesthetic advantage through adding more complexity to the architecture.   4. Without an objective, there is no architecture, without a problem, there is no objective. Architecture is only created with a plausible and clear objective.   Chosen Theory   “Geometry allows architecture to become more complex and intriguing, however, there are constraints to its desi
